In today’s fast-paced world of instant gratification and intense workloads, it is difficult to get adequate rest, eat a proper diet, and stay focused throughout the day. I know that I often find myself scrambling at the end of the day to finish up a project that still hasn’t been completed. Sometimes (more often than I want to admit) I even have to work through the weekend in an effort to get caught up. I dream of the day when I am ahead – the kind of ahead that means I get to take a hot relaxing bath without feeling guilty. My work load isn’t going anywhere, so the answer must be getting more done in less time with less effort. Studies have indicated that people who suffer from an afternoon energy drop are less productive at work. This results in millions of people working past their scheduled hours to finish up daily tasks or projects. How can we make sure we get to leave when the bell rings? Follow these simple tips to skip the drop and stay more energized and productive throughout your day.

      1. 1. Set your alarm 15 minutes earlier than you actually need to wake up, so you can rise gradually and mentally prepare for the day ahead.
      1. 2. Have a small breakfast to kick-start your metabolism. Make sure your breakfast includes a lean protein source and some complex carbohydrates.
      1. 3. Schedule time at least once a week to clean your desk. It’s a great time to make sure you haven’t missed anything important.
      1. 4. Limit your intake of coffee in the morning. True, you get a quick energy spike, but it will wear off quickly and can also induce stress.
      1. 5. Mid-morning munchies happen – when they do, make sure you have a snack that contains high quality protein rather than sugar and carbs.
      1. 6. Make sure you eat lunch away from your desk. It is important to step away from your desk several times throughout the day.
