Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a medical technique developed in China. Having been used for thousands of years, it is one of the most common medical techniques in the world. According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) 3.2 million Americans used acupuncture in 2006. While it might not seem like a big number, it showed an increase of more than 1 million Americans per year from 2001.

Acupuncture works by correcting imbalances in the body. This is done by inserting thin needles into carefully chosen points. These points follow 12 channels or meridians on the hands, arms, feet, legs, torso and head. Each point has a different function and creates a specific response in the body. When performed by a board certified acupuncture physician, acupuncture is extremely safe and effective.

The Science Behind Acupuncture:

  • Neuroimaging has shown that acupuncture:
    • Has a calming affect on the areas of the brain that transmit pain.
    • Boosts impulses in the brain in areas responsible for recovery.
  • Doppler ultrasound indicates that acupuncture improves blood flow in the areas treated.
  • Thermal imaging scans reveal that swelling subsides in the treated areas.
  • Scientists have found that many of the points correspond to nerve bundles or muscle trigger points.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), acupuncture can effectively treat more than 100 ailments. Common conditions that we treat include pain, stress, anxiety, headaches, migraines, menstrual problems, infertility, arthritis, and gastrointestinal problems (IBS, Crohn’s…).
