Cupping

Cupping is one of the oldest techniques of TCM which has led to its use in cultures all over the world. Originating over 2000 years ago, the first cups were made from animal horns such as buffalo. Today acupuncturists and massage therapists use glass, bamboo, or plastic cups.

At Axis Natural Medicine we use fire cupping with glass cups. Dr. Snow or our massage therapist, Keri Garcia light a cotton ball soaked with alcohol and place it into a cup. The fire removes the oxygen which creates a vacuum. The cotton ball is removed and the cup is placed on your skin. As a result of the vacuum, your tissue is gently sucked into the cup. Circulation is increased causing a surge of blood and lymph to remove toxins, reduce swelling, and break up stagnation.

Based on what is being treated a dry-stationary or a moving technique will be used. During moving cupping we lubricate your skin and gently move the cups around. This is a more gentle treatment and therefore lasts 15-30 minutes. Dry-stationary cups are typically left in place for 5- 15 minutes. Some physicians use “wet cupping” which involves piercing the skin and drawing blood into the cups. It can be difficult to maintain a sterile environment with this technique so we don’t offer it.

Cupping is often used to treat painful conditions such as headaches, abdominal pain, arthritis, and back pain. We also use it for asthma, bronchitis, colds and smoking cessation because it removes toxins so efficiently.
